I think it is horrible to have more than one window open. Sorry. you can't look at two boards at once anyway. It is better to be able to have realtime variations and realtime computer evaluations of the best moves showing for only the top 3 variations in realtime.

  8. Hi Lucas,
The software freezes when I try to make STS testing using max time with ProDeo 1.6, which is one of my favorite engines. This is something that has worked in the past, though I cannot say for certain which version of Lucas Chess. Other Engines, such as Pawny 0.3.1 still works without issue.

I also can't seem to find a way to show the board any longer.

Thanks for all your hard work.

I removed the board some time ago, it seemed like a waste of time in the tests I've been doing.

    2. Maximum seconds to think. Using max depth still works.
Oh, that's unfortunate, I liked that feature. I made my own STS table and it was nice to see how the engine were thinking. Which Lucas version still has that feature?

    3. Time=0 and depth=0 means the time engine consider, perhaps this is the maximum you are talking.

    4. Yes that would be the same thing. Sorry if I'm not clear enough, I'm just referring to what the software calls it: https://pasteboard.co/I0eJNta.png
So, the issue is that the software freezes if I type anything into the Time field. Using Depth still works. I've now tested with later versions of ProDeo (1.87 and 1.88) resulting in the same problem. ProDeo is available from http://rebel13.nl/windows/prodeo.html. Note that they have worked in the past for me.

  23. Is it possible to include an overview function that shows a grid of snapshots of board positions taken at a fixed number of moves during a pgn file viewing? To be clearer, suppose that one is viewing a pgn file of a game that lasted 28 ply then a 3-by-4 grid can popup up showing every third-ply-move's board position (28/12 rounded up to an integer and the remainders as empty or final position boards). Explicitly for the example above there would be a grid of 12 board positions with board number one showing the game after 3 ply moves, board number two showing the game after 6 ply moves, ..., board number nine showing 27 ply, board 10 showing 28 ply, and boards 11 and 12 showing either 28 ply or else empty. The grid dimensions could either be fixed or controlled by the viewer.

Thank you for your marvelous program.

    2. Thank you for your reply.

I have a question on a different aspect of your program:
I don't know if I am making a mistake but I am having a problem.
Using Tactical Training and playing through a file with comments, when I right click on the panel that displays the moves the program will display another panel to its right with comments. My problem is that when the position is moved by Previous/Next the comments area doesn't update but stays fixed at a previous comment. At other times no comments at all will appear even the file has one included for each position. Any help would be appreciated.

      Thank you.

      Delete
    3. It's not easy to replicate.
It's best if you send me files and the exact position where the error occurs to the program's email.

      Delete
  24. Lucas,
I think that I have it now. Take a position file with comments for some of the positions. Assume that you are at a position number with a comment. In order to see the comment associated with that particular position, you must make a valid move that will appear in the
    N White Black
panel. Once the move appears (for example)
    N White Black
    1 Be4 Qf6
then by clicking on the blue 1 in the N column, the appropriate comment will appear in the right-most panel if the move panel is right-clicked.

    The bottom line ...
The comments will update to the next position after a move has been registered for that position and the blue 1 in the N column is clicked while the comment pane is open.

Please advise me if an easier method is available or if the comment can be automatically updated when Previous or Next is clicked.

Thanks again for all that you put into the software and your advice.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. The comments that are shown or not (depending on the option chosen) are the global of the position, if you divide a line of the fns file(a position) in which each tactic is based on |, the second part corresponds to the comment to show.

  26. Lucas chess needs, by default, to act more like lichess. In lichess, you can load a pgn of your game and step through it, with graphical best moves showing by arrow sizes. There's a graph of evaluation(move #) on the bottom. Then if you are looking at a move, you can actually do a different move and a new evaluation of that position with arrow sizes automatically shows up. Right now in this Lucaschess you need to do a new evaluation for each variation. Rather useless and super clumsy.

    ReplyDelete
  27. For analysis of one's games, the approach of the program is horrible. The idea is to have the engine compute the best moves for each move and color the ones to review, and save all the computer computations in case the player wants to review it for blunders.

Correct way: compute evaluation(move#), but don't save anything. When a player goes to a position, allow the board to be moved as desired, and keep the engine one with arrows showing best moves, with arrow size indicating how good the moves are. No need to save anything. Why is this better? Computer moves can be calculated quickly now, so it's better to recompute each situation in real time. Currently the program doesn't do what lichess does. See my other comments.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. My idea is to increase the possibilities of kibitzers in the future to allow for example that movements can be made in the same windows of the kibitzers, which may improve the analysis.

      Delete
    2. Thanks for responding Lucas. Please direct me to the documentation about kibitzers. I went there in the program and don't understand it.

    3. https://lucaschess.blogspot.com/search?q=kibitzers

      Delete
    4. Lucas there was no explanation in that of what kibitzers is, however I figured it out. The problem is same as I said before. Specifically, the analysis screen disappears if kibitzers is on. But, having three screens visible SIS NOT how you want to fix the problem. Let's review the problem: you can't see where a blunder is and move correctly to see why it's better than what was played. You can do an analysis. It will tell you where the blunders were. Only if you memorize them can you go to biblitzers and notice why a move is better or worse. You need to open a pgn of your last chess game. Then go to lichess.org/paste Then see how it is done there. You should see only one screen. The evaluation plot is visible while you do various moves away from what you played. You can turn on the arrows to top 3 best moves which will change as you experiment with the moves. That's a better way since you don't need to memorize anything. Delete kibitzers. It is bad. Only have one screen visible. Not two. Integrate kibitzers as an option on the main screen.

      Delete
    5. And that option should always be on so it should not be an option, except to disable realtime computer evaluation as one computer option of many like stockfish etc.

      Delete
    6. Kibitzers are useful to me, I use them a lot of. In the next version I will add more options, like to do moves on the kibitzer board. Kibitzers offers the possibility to know the evaluation of more than one engine.

I wanted to ask you : would it be complicated to add under "PGN viewer"> "Utilities"> "Create tactics training", two options for "Point of view" (in addition to "default", "white" and "black")
=> winner (the user must find white moves if the result is 1-0, and black moves if the result is 0-1)
=> Second half-move (The app plays the first half move of the game, whether it is white or black, and the user must find the second, and so on ...)

LINUX - First binary version

The first official binary version of Lucas Chess on Linux has just been released. It has only been made possible by the great work done by Laudecir Daniel , choosing and compiling the 67 engines, as well as laying the groundwork so that the binaries can be more widely used and others such as shortcut creation, installation scripts, ...... In addition,  Graham O'Neill  has provided Linux-specific drivers for several digital boards. This version has two limitations : 64-bit Linux OS only. Minimum GNU libc version: 2.26 (ldd --version shows it) Installation has been made as simple as possible: The installer is a .sh file, generated with the  makeself  tool, and can be downloaded from: SourceForge , GitHub The file must be run from a terminal with user permissions only: sh ./LucasChessR123_LINUX.sh Launches a GUI with very basic options: Install: Installs in LucasChessR folder inside the home user folder. Generates a shortcut in Applications > Games Launch the application at the end
